Best of the Omo Valley

Arrive at Bole International Airport, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Welcome to Ethiopia! Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by your local tour leader and transferred to your Tulip Hotel.

Addis Ababa, founded in 1886 by Menelik II, is situated at 2,500 meters (8000 ft.) above sea level. It is the 5th highest capital city in the world. The city enjoys an excellent climate year-round, with an average temperature of 25C (77F). Addis Ababa is a pleasant city with wide avenues of jacarandas, interesting museums, and one of the largest open-air markets in Africa, known as the "Mercato".

The rest of the day, relax in your comfortable hotel and get ready for the unique adventure awaiting you.

We will have a nice breakfast in the morning, then a pre-tour briefing, during which we will share all the necessary information for the photo trip to the Omo Valley, one of the most remote places on the planet.

After the pre-tour briefing, we will meet our driver for the transfer to Addis Ababa airport for our 40-minute flight to Arba Minch.

Upon arrival at Arba Minch airport, you will meet with your drivers and drive north to the mountain village of Chencha, located on the southwestern escarpment of the Great Rift Valley, which runs north to south all the way to Mozambique. This is the home of the Dorze people. The Dorze people, once famous warriors in the region, are now renowned cotton weavers whose tall beehive-shaped and bamboo-woven dwellings are among the most distinctive structures to be seen anywhere in Africa.

Our visit to this village and the unique cultural experience is an ideal way to ease into the authentic tribal experience awaiting us deep in the Omo Valley. As the sun goes down, we will drive back to Arba Minch, enjoying the beautiful view of the sunset as we pass through hundreds of cattle herds as they return from a day of grazing in the fields.

After breakfast, we will continue driving further southwest to the Omo Valley. As we drive from Arba Minch to Turmi, you will see many tribal villages and small towns, including the Tsemay and Konso.

Isolated for millennia from the rest of the world, the beautiful Omo Valley is home to an exciting mix of many small and distinctive tribal groups. Amongst others, we find the Kara, the Mursi, and the Hamer — all of whom have retained their own unique customs and traditions. Lifestyles are as varied as the tribes themselves. Lacking any materials, culture, and artifacts common to other cultures, these tribes find unique ways in which to express their artistic impulses.

Our last destination for today is Turmi village, home to the beautiful nomadic Hamer tribes living beside the Keske River. The Hamer display an elaborate and diverse selection of body decorations. They are also identifiable for their high cheekbones, the custom of elaborate beads, cowries, and leather, and thick copper necklaces. The Hamar women are striking with their beautiful colorful beaded skins, ornate necklaces, and metal bangles around their wrist and ankles. We hope to arrive at the lodge for late lunch and be in time to visit a Hamer village with good light for photography.

You will depart from Turmi in the morning for a scenic drive to Erbore, which is approximately 35 kilometers away. This journey will take around an hour, offering glimpses of the beautiful landscapes typical of the region. Upon arrival in Erbore, you will spend the day learning about the local culture. The Erbore people, known for their distinct traditions and vibrant attire, will welcome you with open arms. You will have the opportunity to interact with the community, observe their daily activities, and photograph their unique way of life. This immersive experience will allow you to capture stunning images of the Erbore’s traditional ceremonies, crafts, and colorful clothing. After a fulfilling day of culture and photography, you will return to Turmi in the evening, where you can relax and reflect on the day's experiences.

Today, you will embark on another exciting excursion, this time to visit the Dasenech tribe. The drive from Turmi to the Dasenech settlement is approximately 40 kilometers and will take about an hour. The Dasenech are renowned for their rich cultural practices and unique settlements, which provide excellent opportunities for photography. Upon arrival, you will engage with the tribe, learning about their customs, social structure, and daily life. You will have the chance to photograph their traditional dances, unique hairstyles, and the stunning landscapes surrounding their community. This interaction will provide valuable insights into the Dasenech way of life and allow you to document their culture through your lens. After a day filled with learning and photography, you will return to Turmi in the evening.

This morning, you will depart from Turmi in the morning and journey approximately 30 kilometers to the Karo tribe's territory. The drive will take about 45 minutes, showcasing picturesque scenery along the way. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by the Karo people, known for their intricate body painting and vibrant cultural expressions. You will spend the day engaging with the community, learning about their customs, and photographing their traditional attire and daily life.

In the evening, you will enjoy a luxurious camping experience, complete with comfortable tents featuring showers, bathrooms, electricity, and fridges. The best camping chefs will prepare delicious meals, ensuring that you have a delightful culinary experience while surrounded by nature. After a fulfilling day of cultural exploration, you can relax under the stars at your luxury campsite.

Overnight: Camping

Today, you will set out for an excursion to the Nyangatom tribe, located approximately 40 kilometers from Karo. This journey will take about an hour as you traverse beautiful landscapes and rural settings. Upon arrival, you will immerse yourself in the daily life of the Nyangatom people, who are known for their rich traditions and colorful beadwork. You will have the opportunity to photograph their unique hairstyles, traditional clothing, and ceremonial practices.

After a day spent photographing and learning about the Nyangatom culture, you will return to your luxury campsite in Karo for another night. Enjoy the comforts of your accommodations, including hot showers and gourmet meals prepared by skilled chefs, as you reflect on the day’s experiences around a cozy campfire.

Overnight: Camping

On the third day, you will depart from Karo early in the morning, heading towards Konso, which is approximately 100 kilometers away and will take around two to three hours to reach. The journey will take you through breathtaking landscapes, showcasing the diverse beauty of the region. Once you arrive in Konso, you will check into your accommodation and prepare for an afternoon of exploration.

The Konso people are known for their terraced agriculture, unique wooden totems (known as "waka"), and rich cultural heritage. You will have the chance to photograph their stunning agricultural landscapes, vibrant markets, and traditional crafts. After a day of cultural immersion and photography, you will spend the night in Konso.

After enjoying a hearty breakfast at your accommodation in Konso, you will check out and prepare for your journey to Arbaminch. Departing in the morning, you will embark on a scenic drive of approximately 80 kilometers, which will take about two hours. As you travel, you will pass through picturesque landscapes, including terraced fields and rolling hills, providing a final opportunity for photography.

Upon arrival in Arbaminch, you will head directly to the Arbaminch Airport. Ensure that you have all your belongings and any last-minute souvenirs packed as you prepare for your journey home.

After checking in for your domestic flight, you will board your flight back to Addis Ababa. The flight will take approximately one hour. As you soar above the Ethiopian landscape, take a moment to reflect on the incredible experiences and stunning photographs you’ve captured throughout your tour.
